With the varying logo designs you see online and in person, you might be wondering — what really makes for a good logo design?
As a designer myself, there are many factors that go into it so let’s dive in and find out.
1. Color palette
5 Epic Font Pairings You Can’t Go Wrong With
Tired of searching for fonts? With my 10+ years of design experience, I’ve put together the best font pairings for you to use, where to find them, and what industry they’re best for.
Get the Free GuideOne of the first factors in what makes a logo design good, is the color palette. You do not want to overcomplicate your design, and throw 10 colors at it like it’s a painting.
I recommend 3-4 primary colors, which means these will be your brand colors. This is with exception to the grays, blacks and whites — which many times can be counted as neutral colors that compliment any brand.
Refer to the color wheel to help you coordinate a color palette that is cohesive — either complimentary, or analogous (colors next to each other on the wheel).
Secondary colors can be tints and shades of your primary colors, helped to compliment it as well.
What’s most important when doing color discovery, is to consider your audience. Nobody is going to care that your favorite color is pink — what matters is what color your audience will associate with your business. If you’re a lawn care company, for example, pink probably just won’t make sense — as many associate greens and earthy tones with lawn care.
2. Simplicity
In any new logo design, we approach it with simplicity. Too much detail and intricate lines are going to easily get lost in the various ways your logo will be used.
If you look at some of the most recognizable logos, such as Target, Apple, McDonald’s and Pepsi, they are incredibly simple. This makes them easy to recognize, easy to read, and easy to apply to any materials at any size.
Additionally, a simple design is more likely to be evergreen and last for many years — which is always ideal.
3. Custom design
When it comes to any good logo design, they are surely not made from online tools like Canva or LogoMaker.
Sure, if you’re a brand new business with virtually no budget, then those online logo creators might work for you to get started with.
However, if you’re running a business that you’re serious about and looking to create a brand that’s going to last and really have an affect on your core audience, then hiring a logo design for a custom design is ideal.
There you have it
Those are the 3 things that are the most important factors in what makes a good logo design.
